Biochar is aĀ Natural Organic Soil Improver, a specialised porous charcoal product.Ā It has incredible properties including the ability toĀ hold moisture and nutrientsĀ ready for plants to access. Biochar acts like a sponge making soils more drought-resistant and often reduces the need for fertiliser. This product can be mixed with up to 50 Litres of garden soil, potting mix or compost. Securely packaged in a bucket (5L) you may choose to use again.Ā
TheĀ high carbonĀ productĀ adds structure to soilsĀ and is an effective means to lock up carbon that otherwise would be released into the atmosphere. By using Biochar you are playing an active role in preventing climate change byĀ storing carbon for the long-term while growing better plants. Ā
Biochar is often best blended with a nutrient-rich material before use. AĀ freeĀ organicĀ OCP Eco Seaweed sachet included -Ā once in the solution just add to Biochar in the supplied bucket (allow to absorb)Ā and then blend with a quality compostĀ to help populate with microflora prior use (best left for 2 weeks prior use). Typically 10% Biochar to 90% compost/quality potting mix before using in pots, planting or general garden use. Can also be surface applied to establishedĀ garden beds or placed under mulch.
How to Use Biochar:
- Biochar can be spread over soil (top-dressed) and then dug in (preferred method ) or left to infiltrate naturally.
- Use in pots by blending at 10% with a quality potting mix.
- Apply biochar to your garden beds at a rate of 1 litre per 1 - 2 m2 of soil. Application rates may vary depending on your existing soil quality i.e. heavy sand or clay may need a higher application rate compared to already biologically active garden soil.
- Can be added to your compost heap or mixed in when the compost is mature.
- Can be placed under mulch.
- Can be ātrenchedā around the drip line of trees & shrubs.
Condition/Activate Biochar:
- Depending on the application it is often beneficial to soak biochar in a nutrient-rich biological source such as seaweed solution, fish emulsion or compost tea.
- Biochar can also be added to aged manure or compost before use (ideally leave for 2 weeks before use - this helps āchargeā the biochar with microbes). Continue to add other nutrients to the soil that your plants require - biochar helps āholdā nutrients in soil as well as ensuring a better passage for roots, retaining moisture & promoting soil life.
About Biochar Video:
How to Use Biochar Video:
Who is Triple R Biochar? Manufactured since 2015 our premium biochar is made from clean, natural woody plant waste. The carbon is captured efficiently as highly porous charcoal in a modern pyrolysis unit. Instead of carbon being lost as a greenhouse gas to the atmosphere a high percentage of the original waste is retained as solid carbon, ready to apply to soils. Microbes in the soil quickly move into the cavities the biochar provides, multiply and enhance soil carbon through their natural lifecycle while unlocking nutrients for plant roots to absorb more readily. Biochar also extends the plant availability of added nutrients as it is highly adsorbant and prevents nutrients from being leached away during rain events for example.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. What is the grade of this biochar?
A. According to the manufacturer approximately 90% of the Biochar is between 1mm and 10mm and is mostly 5mm.
